Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Ontario Human Rights Code?
The Code is a provincial law that protects people in Ontario from discrimination and harassment in key areas such as employment, housing, and services. It sets out your rights and the responsibilities of others.

What is the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO)?
The HRTO is an independent body that resolves claims of discrimination and harassment filed under the Ontario Human Rights Code. It can order remedies, compensation, and policy changes.

How long do I have to file a human rights complaint?
You generally have one year from the date of the last alleged discriminatory act to file an application with the HRTO. There are some exceptions, but it’s important to act quickly.

Do I need a paralegal or lawyer to file a complaint?
While it is possible to file on your own, having a legal representative can significantly improve your chances of success. We help ensure your application is complete, well-argued, and supported by the right evidence.

What kind of remedies can the HRTO order?
The Tribunal can award monetary compensation, require employers or service providers to change policies or practices, and even issue non-monetary remedies like reinstatement or apologies.
